TECIP InSTITUTE RESEARCHER WINS THE 2018 CHARLES KAO AWARD FOR THE BEST PAPER IN “IEEE OPTICAL COMMUNICATIONS & NETWORKING”: “IT SATISFIES THE DEMANDS OF 5G NETWORK”
Researchers from the TECIP Institute at Sant’Anna School working with the Politecnico di Milano and the UC Davis - University of California, have been awarded the 2018 Charles Kao Award for Best Optical Communications & Networking paper by the IEEE Communications Society.
The paper “5G Fronthaul-Latency and Jitter Studies of CPRI over Ethernet” under the supervision of Luca Valcarenghi, Professor in Telecommunication and Networking, describes pioneering work for the applicability of front-haul technologies and their ability to fulfill 5G latency and capacity requirements.
The winners were announced at the “IEEE International Conference on Communications” in Kansas City, USA. The study investigates whether Common Public Radio Interface (CPRI) over Ethernet (CoE) can meet delay and jitter requirements. It has the potential to encapsulate CPRI over CoE as an attractive solution to satisfy the unprecedented demands of future 5G wireless network in a cost-effective manner. Experiments show that the proposed scheduling policy of CoE flows on Ethernet can reduce jitter when redundant Ethernet capacity is provided.
The recipients of the 2018 Charles Kao Award are Koteswararao Kondepu, research fellow at the TeCIP Institute (Communication, Information and Perception Technologies), PhD students Biswanath Mukherjee and Divya Chitimalla from UC Davis - University of California, and Massimo Tornatore, Professor in Communication Engineering from Politecnico di Milano.
